While this Hostel was in a great downtown location the room was awful. The sheets had not been cleaned, there was a terrible sewer smell in the bathroom and the walls and floor were filthy. However, the hostel was on the corner of a pedestrian street with several nice restaurants catering to Western tourists, importantly breakfast. We really liked Kota Kinabalu, in fact it was our favourite city in Malaysia. The town sits on a beautiful harbour with islands just offshore that are now a marine park. Between the major roads are narrow 4-5 story apartment blocks similar to what we saw in Sandakan. The difference here is that they have a community feel and the alleyways have been pedestrianised and planted with tall palm trees. There are large air-conditioned malls, a Filipino crafts market, night market and some nice tree lined roads. Also like Sandakan, there are wooded hills behind the main part of town helping to give Kota Kinabalu a small town feel. Unlike Sandakan there are no crowds of depressed people hanging about.
